Case study - Avoiding technical overkill

A new web site is being developed with higher than normal availability requirements. The customer’s initial view was that the project required multiple duplicated remotely hosted servers, with 30 minutes downtime per year.

Multibase determined that hosting the customer's application in this environment was no simple undertaking. It would require complex and costly network connections, significant hardware expense, and a significant amount of technical time to design and manage this custom solution – yet the available budget was more suited to a modest virtual hosting situation.

The budget for the grand plan would need to be in excess of $120,000 per annum. Multibase facilitated discussion between the parties to define the requirements in detail, and it was determined that the customer's application did not require the original hosting plan to achieve the goals of the project. The budget was reduced to about $35,000 per year. The project includes services as well as hosting. Delivery is to be staged, initially using virtual dedicated servers rather than dedicated hardware, as the application is installed, piloted and ramped up to full capacity, further saving the customer. Strategic use of virtualization is combined with the features of the chosen content management system to deliver a robust, economical and highly-available hosting solution at a fraction of the price of the original plan. A modest investment in strategic consultancy delivers a fully-documented and tested plan for ongoing availability and rapid disaster recovery in the event of a failure.
